Gridiron Glory & Help for Our Community
For the second consecutive year, Altrusa International of Fayetteville sponsored the
Battle of the Badges. This flag football game pits the local law enforcement personnel against the fire fighters and emergency medical workers for bragging rights for a whole year. The competition is fierce between the two teams and possession of the winners trophy represents a great deal of pride and determination to the winning team. Team members, coaches and the organizations they represent are more than willing to partner with Altrusa for this fun event that benefits so many in our community.
In 2006 Altrusa of Fayetteville donated over $11,000.00 to the Washington Madison County Drug Court Foundation to be used for scholarships for proram graduates retooling for new jobs and a new life in the workforce.
On September 16, the weather was breezy and beautiful and the 2nd Annual Battle of the Badges in Fayetteville was a whopping success!
The Fire Fighters team, for the second year, was once again triumplant over the Law Enforcement team. There were no injuries to speak of except maybe some pulled muscles and perhaps a few bruised egos. The team participants did a great job and certainly gave us an entertaining contest. Rick Schaeffer, local sports casting personality, was an awesome announcer and our ASTRA Girls showed real team spirit for both the blue team and the red team.
We gave away a lot of prizes and one of our players even kicked a field goal during halftime for our Razorback Baseball Box package!
It took a great effort by each and every Altrusan to make this event such a success. We are very proud that The Childrens Safety Cener, our 2007 beneficiary, will have $12,200 to extend loving help to Northwest Arkansas children in need. The Safety Center provides a place for victims of abuse and neglect to receive treatment and support in a safe and comforting evnironment.
Special thanks to each of our sponsors, the Fayetteville School District for providing our venue free of charge, and to our Co-Chairs Carol Gillespie and Dee Wright. Without each of them we couldnt have done it. Congratulations, Altrusans! You are real champions!
Salina Club News: A new service project for Altrusa International of Salina, KS was implemented at their December 3rd Christmas Party. Members were asked to bring mittens, gloves, hats and scarves to be donated to school children at one of the local elementary schools. Kristina Litchman, project chair, chose Oakdale Elementary School to be the recipient of our gifts this year. Their Principal is thrilled that her school was selected. Approximately 100 items were donated by the members of the Salina club so that school children can be warm this winter.
